Dr. Bouxsein received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and conducted a postdoctoral fellowship at the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, MA. She is currently Director of the Center for Advanced Orthopedic Studies at BIDMC and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bouxsein’s research focuses on understanding the biomechanical aspects of skeletal fragility, and includes studies of age-related fractures, disuse-osteoporosis, spaceflight induced bone loss, and stress fractures in military trainees. She has published over 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts. She is a fellow of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research and of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers. She currently serves as a Board Member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, and as a member of the National Academy of Science and Engineering’s Committee on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space.
