Dr. Matthew Pommerening is an Associate Surgeon in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Clinical Instructor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Pommerening is a native Texan and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He received both his medical degree and general surgery training from the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, where he also completed a two-year clinical research fellowship and Master of Science degree in Clinical Research. He went on to complete a cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) followed by a thoracic surgery fellowship at the Brigham. He is board certified in general surgery, and he is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS).
Dr. Pommerening’s clinical practice is focused on the surgical and multidisciplinary care of patients with both benign and malignant thoracic and foregut diseases. His clinical interests and specialty include minimally invasive surgery, diagnostic and interventional airway procedures, thoracic oncology, and advanced foregut surgery. He is also interested in clinical outcomes research focused on designing and conducting clinical trials and quality improvement initiatives to advance evidence-based practice in thoracic surgery.
