Michael Prerau

Michael J. Prerau (Member, IEEE) received the B.S. degree in computer science and the M.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Columbia University, New York, NY, USA, in 2002 and 2003, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in computational neuroscience from Boston University, Boston, MA, USA, in 2010.,Since 2016, he has been an Assistant Professor of medicine with the Harvard Medical School, a Faculty Member with the Division of Sleep Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and an Associate Neuroscientist and the Director of the Sleep Neurophysiology Signal Processing Core, Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research interests include the linkage between changes in brain dynamics during sleep and the pathophysiology of neurological dysfunction. By applying state-of-the-art quantitative methods to the analysis of the sleep electroencephalogram, it is possible to use sleep for biomarker discovery, facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of neurological, psychiatric, and sleep disorders. His laboratory focuses on developing novel approaches to statistical modeling and signal processing algorithms for the analysis of neural data during sleep, with direct applications to basic science, biomarker discovery, and medical device development. He was a recipient of the Research Image Award for data visualization by the Sleep Research Society, as well as the Young Investigator Oral Presentation Award by the World Sleep Congress.
