Michael Raghunath

Professor for Biochemistry, Protein Technology and Tissue Engineering at ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences

Biography

Michael Raghunath is a physician scientist appointed as Head of Cell Biology and Tissue Engineering at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Wädenswil at the shores of lake Zurich. He was jointly appointed from 2003-2016 between Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Biochemistry at the National University of Singapore. His basic and translational research experience spans more than 25 yrs. during which he became an internationally distinguished scientist in the field of matrix biology (pathobiochemistry of collagens and elastic microfibrils) and skin biology (wound repair, cornification disorders). Developing macromolecular crowding as principle in cell biology, he has created a novel field in Tissue Engineering to build cell-specific and lineage-directing microenvironments. Dr. Raghunath was trained in immunology (1988-1990; University of Heidelberg), matrix biology and wound healing (postdoc at University of Zurich, Switzerland, 1990-1995). His independent career started 1995 with a professorial qualification grant from the German Science Foundation at the University of Muenster. After clinical training in dermatology in Muenster from 1997-2000 he joined Dr. Suwelack Skin& Health Care AG as R&D director to position the company in the wound care market. From 2005-2009 he was Deputy Head Research (Bioengineering) and from 2005-2008 Chair of the Graduate Programme in Bioengineering in the NUS Graduate School of Integrative Sciences & Engineering.
