Michele Bailey

Adjunct Professor

Biography

-

Michele M. Bailey, DVM, director of animal care and veterinary services at the University of Western Ontario, has been named associate vice provost for research animal resources at Cornell University and director of Laboratory Animal Services in Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine.

As associate vice provost and head of the university's Center for Research Animal Resources (CRAR), Bailey has overall responsibility for the care of animals used in teaching and research in more than 140 facilities on Cornell's Ithaca campus and throughout New York state (with the exception of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City). As director of Laboratory Animal Services, she heads a team of technicians who care for animals in teaching and research at the veterinary college. Also, Bailey will work with the university's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, which reviews proposals for research involving animals

Announcing the appointment, which was effective July 7, 2001, Charles R. Fay, Cornell vice provost for research administration, said: "With Dr. Bailey's leadership, we intend to make the university's first-rate animal-care program even better. "

Bailey describes CRAR and Laboratory Animal Services as service-oriented departments, functioning as partners to facilitate investigators' research. "We are available to provide consultation and advice on animal health issues, animal models, research design and care and safety of animals in research," she said. "We provide on-call veterinary and technical service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we have expertise in the renovation, upgrade and new construction of animal facilities.

CRAR also offers instruction in the regulatory and ethical aspects of using animals in research, as well as practical, hands-on training in animal handling and procedures. Noting the shortage of qualified veterinarians in her specialty, Bailey said she will work to establish a post-graduate training program in laboratory animal medicine and science.

Bailey earned her doctor of veterinary medicine degree (1982) at the University of Guelph, Ontario. She was elected a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1983 and a diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine in 1998.

Before joining the administration of the University of Western Ontario, where she also was a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Bailey was a clinical veterinarian, manager and assistant director for animal services (1986-91) at Connaught Laboratories Ltd. in Toronto. From 1984 to 1986, she was a research associate in the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University, Ontario.
