Murali Chandrashekaran

Vice Provost (International) and Fred H. Siller Professor at The University of British Columbia

Biography

-

Dr. Chandrashekaran joined UBC in 2011 as Sauder School of Business Director of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School and as Associate Dean, Professional Graduate Programs. He also served as Sauder’s Senior Associate Dean, Strategic Partnerships and Global Initiatives before beginning his term as Vice-Provost, International in September 2017. Dr. Chandrashekaran is a strong proponent of collaborative and multidisciplinary research and study, and has been instrumental in developing programs and networks for faculty and students across the university as well as institutions locally and globally. He has forged relationships and partnerships with academic and community institutions in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Most recently, Dr. Chandrashekaran led the creation of the Collaborative on Urban Resilience and Effectiveness (CURE), a global initiative that brings together several universities (UBC, Yale, Tec de Monterrey, NUS, IIT-Madras, FGV-São Paulo, Hitotsubashi University) and practitioners from business, government, and civil society to mobilize talent, knowledge, and experience across disciplines, colleges and universities, community organizations, cities and corporations to drive inclusive urban prosperity, innovation and development.

Dr. Chandrashekaran serves as the UBC representative to the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM), an alliance of 29 leading international business schools, of which UBC is the only Canadian partner. He was also the Chair of the Americas Region for the Partnership in International Management network (PIM), a consortium of 60 leading international business schools, and has co-chaired two PIM conferences in Brazil and India.

During his time as Associate Dean, Professional Graduate Programs, and Director of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School, Dr. Chandrashekaran implemented changes to the MBA program, including introducing the mandatory Global Immersion program. That program requires students to travel to international destinations to work alongside counterparts at local business schools on consulting projects with local businesses and community organizations. He also led the creation and launch of the UBC Bachelor + Master of Management Dual Degree program, which has grown the size of the graduate school significantly and bridged the Sauder School of Business with other UBC faculties.

Dr. Chandrashekaran is currently the Fred H. Siller Professor of Marketing and Behavioural Science in the UBC Sauder School of Business. He is widely published in leading academic journals in the areas of metrics (specifying models to capture various market phenomena) and valuation (estimating the impact of assets and investments on market-based outcomes). Dr. Chandrashekaran obtained his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology–Madras and his Ph.D. in Marketing from Arizona State University. Before joining UBC, Dr. Chandrashekaran held professorial and administrative positions in the business schools of the University of Cincinnati and the University of New South Wales.
