Biography

Dr Nadya Patel, an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Communication Skills, has twenty years of teaching and workshop facilitation experiences. She leads a faculty community of practice for critical thinking in the disciplines, and teaches interdisciplinary courses on critical thinking and communication skills, and critical-design thinking in design innovation. Previously, she taught engineering leadership, community leadership, critical thinking and writing, and English for academic purposes in NUS. She conducts professional development workshops for faculty on pedagogical and instructional approaches to improve teaching and learning practices. For professionals and executives, she conducts consultancy training on business communication, empathetic leadership communication and effective professional communication.

Previously, Dr Nadya also worked as a research fellow at NIE-NTU. She was involved in two nationwide large-scale research projects including the CORE study on the impact of national initiative TLLM on teaching and learning in schools, and the Singapore Kindergarten Impact Project (SKIP). Her applied research interests include investigating classroom discourse, scaffolding learning, integrating critical thinking skills and multimodality in instruction, conversation analysis and dialogic teaching and learning in the disciplines. She is a general editor for International Journal of TESOL Studies (IJTS) and currently co-edits a special issue on Critical Thinking and Communicating in the Disciplines.

Over the years, Dr Nadya has received teaching commendation awards from NUS, a graduate research award from NIE-NTU and an innovation commendation PS21 ExCEL (Excellence through Continuous Enterprise and Learning) award for MOE. She is a well-regarded educator, highly-rated workshop facilitator and regular presenter at international educational conferences. Dr Nadya is very much a teacher-researcher at heart and she always seeks the smallest of ways to be a better one every day!
