-

Dr. Nemai Karmakar (PhD(ITEE), MHEd, MSc(EE), MSc(EEE), PGDipTHE, BSc (EEE)) works in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University as an Associate Profession within the department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE).

He is the Director, Monash Microwave, Antenna, RFID and Sensor Laboratory (MMARS), Director, ECSE External Industry Engagement Committee, ECSE Discipline Coordinator Continuous Professional Development (CDP), ECSE Discipline Coordinator ENG5006 Research Practice; ECSE Coordinator ECSE ENG5006 Research Methods; Coordinator TRC3500 Sensors and Artificial Perception; Senior Member of IEEE (1999), P-ENG and Graduate Member of IEAust.
He obtained the B.Sc (EEE) and M.Sc (EEE) from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka in 1987 and 1989 respectively, the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada in 1991, the PhD degree from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia in 1999, Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching in Higher Education (PGDipTHE) from The National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2001 and Master in Higher Education (MHEd) from Griffith University in 2007. His PhD thesis work concerned the area of the switched beam and phased array antennas for mobile satellite communications. His PhD work was one of the most significant findings at The University of Queensland in 1998 and published in UQ NEWS and the national media such as ABC Radio and Canberra Times. His PhD work was elected the third best student paper in the 1997 Asia Pacific Microwave Conference held in Hong Kong.

From 1989 to 1990, he worked as an Assistant Engineer in Electronics Institute, Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Dhaka, Bangladesh. In August 1990, he was a Research Assistant at the Communications Research Group, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. From 1992 to 1995 he worked as a Microwave Design Engineer at Mitec Ltd., Brisbane, Australia where he contributed to the development of land mobile satellite antennas for the Australian Mobilesat. Hundreds of these antennas were sold to Queensland Rails for Optus Mobilesat communications. From 1995 to 1996 he taught final year courses on Microwaves and Antenna Technologies at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. From September 1998 to March 1999 he worked as a research engineer within the Radar Laboratory, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. From March 1999 to July 2004 he was an Assistant Professor and Graduate Advisor in the Division of Communications Engineering, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. From July 2004 to December 2010 he was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering (ECSE), Monash University, Clayton, Australia. Currently, he is holding Associate Professor and Director of Monash Microwave, Antenna, RFID and Sensor (MMARS) Laboratory within ECSE, Monash University

He leads a world-class research team of approximately 22 research staff comprised of 16 PhD students, PDFs and RAs. He has national and international researchcollaborations with many Australian and overseas organisations such as MIT Auto-ID Lab and Xerox PERC, USA.
