ESADE Business School

Nicola Bergamo, PhD in Byzantine History, is a historian and writer. In 2006 he founded the Bisanzio Cultural Association, of which he is president, and in 2015 he was named academician of merit by the Accademia Angelico Costantiniana. He is scientific director of the international journal of Byzantine studies «Porphyra».

Research areas: he deals with Byzantine history between the 6th and 8th centuries and with the relations between the empire and the Roman-barbarian kingdoms, with particular interest in the Lombards. His research is also interested in Venetian history and the history of military orders.

Main publications: Constantine V, emperor of Byzantium (Il Cerchio, 2007); The Lombards. From the mythical origins to the fall of the kingdom in Italy (LEG, 2012); Irene, Emperor of Byzantium (Jouvence, 2015); The army of Byzantium in Italy (Soldiershop, 2016); Byzantine Venice: from the myth of its foundation to 1082 (Helvetia, 2018).
