Biography

Aalto University School of Business

The focus of my research is how new industries and market categories emerge and develop. The studies explore this topic from multiple theoretical perspectives, including institutional theory, symbolic management, practices of market categorization, temporality, discourse, and agency in nascent fields. Empirically, my collaborative research draws on extensive qualitative datasets on e.g. the development of nanotechnology, functional foods and local foods. I have received Organization Studies Best Paper Award 2011-2012 also known as Roland Calori Prize, and EGOS 2009 Best Paper Award for the studies that examine the emergence of nanotechnology. Additionally, I study the rapid transformation of the university sector by looking into some recent cases of university mergers, and the negotiation of materiality and aesthetics in the Helsinki Guggenheim project. I am also the member of the Executive Committee of the Organization and Management Theory (OMT) Division at the Academy of Management. With regards to corporate projects, I have led a research project for UPM, one of the largest biomaterials companies in Finland, informing on aspects of commercialization of new innovations and entry to new market segments. Prior to my academic career I worked as a consultant for Accenture and a brief time in the media sector at Bertelsmann in Germany
