Background and Education

Paul M Lubeck is Interim Director of African Studies and Senior Research Professor who researches the political economy of African development, industrial transformation strategies, Islamist political movements, African business initiatives, and the role of ICT for bolstering youth employment. Lubeck’s recognized expertise analyzes the intersection of cultural politics and political economy in Muslim Nigeria. Currently Lubeck is spearheading an initiative on regional strategies for employment generation and industrial transformation in Nigeria. His first book,  Islam and Urban Labor in Northern Nigeria, was awarded the Herskovits Prize, and a second, The African Bourgeoisie, analyzes indigenous businesses in Nigeria, Kenya and the Ivory Coast.  A social entrepreneur, Lubeck is the Founding Director of the Everett Program for digital social entrepreneurship at UC Santa Cruz (www.everettprogram.org).

Former and current affiliations include: Northwestern University, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley, Bayero University, Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Ibadan, El Colegio de Mexico, the University of Malaya, St Antony’s College (Oxford University), Bristol University, the Centre for Democracy and Development (Abuja) and the Centre for Information Technology and Development (Kano).
