Biography

Paul Sanchez-Ruiz is an assistant professor of Management at the Driehaus College of Business. He received his PhD in Entrepreneurship from the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University in 2019, where he won Best PhD student two years in a row (2018 and 2019) and was the recipient of the ConocoPhillips Best Dissertation Award. Prior to pursuing his PhD, Sanchez-Ruiz was involved in owning, launching and managing three start-up ventures and worked for the Federal Government in Mexico.

Sanchez-Ruiz's research focuses on how entrepreneurial ventures adopt resourceful actions and strategic capabilities under extreme environmental constraints, and how such strategies spread and differ across the entrepreneurial venture landscape. He is especially interested in the downside of resourceful venture actions and their subsequent unintended or undesirable outcomes. He focuses on a range of behavioral determinants for this purpose, including behaviors related to political beliefs, biases, and self-concepts.

Sanchez-Ruiz also conducts research on the effects of family ties in ownership and management on firm performance metrics. In this work, he examines the impacts of family ties on a range of financial and non-financial outcomes, including marital stability, transgenerational succession intention, functioning and development. His research on this topic has been published in Family Business Review, the Journal of Family Business Strategy, and the Journal of Group & Organization Management. He has also presented his research at numerous conferences hosted by the Academy of Management, Babson, and other organizations. Sanchez-Ruiz teaches courses in strategic management and entrepreneurship, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He thoroughly enjoys working with students and helping them as they develop new ventures.
