Peter Gould

Adjunct Professor

Biography

-

I am a former turnaround investor and corporate CEO with extensive non-profit management experience who has migrated from corporate life to academia, with a focus on cultural heritage management, the economics of heritage, and the governance of community organizations in the developed and developing world. My Ph.D. research focused on community economic development associated with heritage sites. Subsequent writing and teaching has addressed the intersection of archaeology and heritage management with economic development.

I am interested in the governance of community organizations as an essential foundation for economically and socially sustainable heritage management. My research has been geographically broad-based, including study of community organizations in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Peru and Belize. In addition to journal articles and book chapters, my publications include the books Empowering Communities through Archaeology and Heritage (Bloomsbury 2018), Collision or Collaboration: Archaeology Encounters Economic Development (edited with K. Anne Pyburn, Springer 2017), and Archaeology and Economic Development (Edited with Paul Burtenshaw, Oxbow Press and Routledge, 2015).

I also have extensive experience with non-profit organizations in the United States. I served for six years as Chairman of the Zoological Society of Philadelphia, three years as Chairman of the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, on the board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and on the boards of the Gesu School in Philadelphia, the Academy of Vocal Arts, and the Sustainable Preservation Iniative. I am an adjunct professor of archaeology at the American University of Rome. In addition to my service on the Penn Museum board, I am a Consulting Scholar with the Penn Cultural Heritage Center and teach at Penn.
