The College of Engineering: Integrative Systems + Design
Richard E. Hughes, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He holds a B.S.E. in Civil Engineering from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Industrial & Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. He worked at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries in Olympia, WA, following the completion of his doctorate in 1991. From 1994 to 1996 he was a post-doctoral fellow in orthopaedic biomechanics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, under the supervision of Dr. Kai-Nan An. He then worked as a safety engineer at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Morgantown, WV.
In 1998 he joined the University of Michigan as a faculty member in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Hughes has published over 85 peer-reviewed papers and is President-elect of the American Society of Biomechanics. He is Co-Director of the Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI), which is a statewide registry of hip and knee replacement patients. He is a member of the American Society of Biomechanics, Orthopaedic Research Society, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons - Associate Member Basic Science. He also holds appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Industrial & Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan.
