Wagner Graduate School of Public Service

Richard Maloney , PhD is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Performing Arts Administration graduate program at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University where he teaches courses in managing performing arts organizations and cultural policy.

Previous to this, from 2002-2016, he was Assistant Professor of Arts Administration and Assistant Director of the Arts Administration graduate program at Boston University. 

Maloney has played lute, guitar, lavta, and hand percussion with several Boston area early music ensembles.  He is currently focusing on the performance of troubadour music.  As an arts administrator, he worked for the Boston Early Music Festival and New England Conservatory and served as General Manager of the internationally acclaimed early music ensemble, the Boston Camerata. 

Maloney’s scholarship has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and published by the Brookings Institution and the Journal of Cultural Management and Policy.  He previously served as a Research Associate at the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University. Currently, he sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Art for Life and the Irish Journal of Arts Management and Cultural Policy.  He also serves as a jury member for the ENCATC Research Award on Cultural Policy and Cultural Management which is awarded to the author of the best doctoral dissertation in the field each year.  Maloney’s scholarship examines why and how small and midsize municipalities pursue cultural economic development as an urban regeneration strategy.  His most recent work explores how policy networks form and function and the impact they have on the implementation of local cultural economic development policies.

Maloney has served on the board of directors of the Association of Arts Administration Educators and the European Network of Cultural Administration and Training Centers.  He currently serves on the board of directors of the arts advocacy organization MASS Creative, where he is co-chair of the Arts Policy working group.

Maloney holds a BA in History from Bates College; a BM in Professional Music (guitar) from Berklee College of Music; a Graduate Diploma in Early Music Performance (lute) from the Longy School of Music of Bard College; a MS in Arts Administration from Boston University; and a PhD in Law and Public Policy from Northeastern University.
