Robert Shorten

I am Professor of Cyber-physical Systems at Imperial College London.

I graduated (from UCD) with a B.E. degree in EE in 1990, and a Ph.D. degree in 1996. Since then, I have worked in academia and industry, and I continue to split my time between both.

In industry, I have been employed by both Daimler-Benz Research and IBM Research (where I led the Control and Optimisation Group at IBM Research Ireland in the area of Smart Cities).

Highlights of my academic activities include my time as a Professor at the Hamilton Institute (I was a co-founder of the Hamilton); spending time as a Visiting Professor at TU Berlin in 2011-12; and a very formative period working with Professor Narendra at Yale University.

My research interests include: Smart Mobility and Smart Cities; Control Theory and Dynamics; Hybrid Dynamical Systems; Networking; Linear Algebra; Collaborative Consumption.

I am the Irish member of the European Union Control Association (EUCA) assembly (2016-19); a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society Technical Group on Smart Cities; a member of the IFAC Technical Committees for Automotive Control; and a member of the IFAC Technical Committee for Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems.
