Dean, the Business School

Biography
-
Appointed as Dean after an interregnum typified by substantial staff turnover, modest research performance and lack of direction and stability. The School was one of the largest within the University, with a turnover of approximately £18m, staff of about 150 and was amongst the top 25% of UK business schools by size. The School had successful undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with approximately 3000 students and an outstanding reputation for the employability and capability of its students. The School was financially successful, contributing substantially to the University’s financial surplus.
Key challenges were to stabilise the academic staff turnover, rationalise the portfolio, improve research performance, define workload management practices and develop enterprise and practitioner engagement. Progress has been positive with significant increases in staff satisfaction, more than halving staff turnover and establishing a full senior management team for the first time in five years. The REF submission substantially exceeded previous expectations with positive progress in research bid submissions. The School rose from 55 to 34 in the Business and Management category of the Guardian University Rankings, 2014 (Bournemouth University 55 to 53).
