Roman Beck is Full Professor within the BusinessIT department at IT University of Copenhagen. He is Lead Researcher and Head of the European Blockchain Center. Roman is among the top 5% of all German professors in business administration.
As Blockchain economist, his research focuses on the role of changing nature of work due to Blockchain with focus on governance and value creation in decentralized systems. He is interested in institutional logics of organizations, organizational mindfulness, and awareness. Before joining ITU, Roman has been Assistant Professor and the E-Finance and Service Science Chair at Goethe University in Frankfurt between 2008 and 2013. Roman serves also as Senior Editor for the DATA BASE Journal and as Department Editor for the Business & Information Systems Engineering Journal and Editor for the Journal of Business Economics. Roman has published over 30 journal and 80 peer-reviewed conference articles in outlets such as Management Information Systems Quarterly, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, and many others. He is the co-conference chair for the International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS) 2022. Roman is Head of the Danish ISO TC 307 Blockchain & Distributed Ledger Technology standardization group and Convenor of ISO TC 307 WG5 Blockchain Governance standardization. He also represents Denmark at the European Blockchain Partnership Technical Steering Group.
Roman has been principal investigator of the German government-funded joint research project “Financial Business Grids” between 2008 and 2010 and headed research on services sourcing, services management, and services engineering at the E-Finance Lab from 2006 to 2014. He also conducts research in the area of IT cooperations within public private partnerships and the management of critical systems in the public sector together with the ISPRAT institute. Roman has supervised twelve successful PhD students and currently supervises three PhD students. His research has been awarded with several best paper awards.
As a visiting scholar, he spent three months at CRITO, University of California at Irvine in 2003 and further two months at the School of Information, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 2004. In 2008, he was visiting professor at the CIS Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University at Atlanta for three months and spent another two months at NYU Stern in 2010. During his research sabbatical in 2012, he was a visiting fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra for three months. Until today, Roman has raised € 3.31 Mio research grants from the US and German National Science Foundation, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), and private organizations.
