Fordham University

Ryan Donovan Purcell is a scholar of modern American popular culture. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2020 and was appointed as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Frederick Douglass Institute at the University of Rochester before coming to Montclair State University. His writings on history and popular culture have appeared in the Journal of Urban History, Rethinking History, Los Angeles Review of Books, and Hyperallergic. His work is also featured in the forthcoming collection from the University of Chicago Press entitled From the Bowery to the Bronx: A Cultural History of New York Through Song. Purcell currently serves on the editorial board at the Gotham Center for New York City History at the City University of New York Graduate Center in Manhattan.
