University of Witwatersrand

Professor Salim A. Nakhjavani is a CILRAP Research Fellow and a practising advocate at the Johannesburg Bar. Previously, he was a Legal Research and Writing Expert and Adjunct Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand and has taught law at the University of Cape Town and King’s College. He has served as United Nations prosecutor in the criminal proceedings against the senior Khmer Rouge leaders in Cambodia (2011-2015), and a member of the legal team that established the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (2002-2003), where he was responsible for the drafting of the first Code of Conduct for international prosecutors and helped to develop the suite of legal tools known today as the ICC Case Matrix and ICC Legal Tools Database. He was Whewell Scholar in International Law at the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded the LL.M. degree (First Class). He holds LL.B. and B.C.L. degrees (magna cum laude) from McGill University and an LL.B. degree from the University of South Africa.

As a litigator, Nakhjavani has participated in complex corporate and commercial disputes, including matters of commercial fraud and theft, delinquency, abuse of corporate personality and shareholder oppression, as well as transnational disputes, matters of public and private international law, and international criminal law, including apartheid accountability matters. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Torkel Opsahl Academic EPublisher (TOAEP) and the Constitutional Court Review (South Africa). He has been an adviser to the Case Matrix Network for several years, through which he has worked to develop legal research tools and investigative and prosecutorial capacity-strengthening in several countries in Asia and Africa. He is also a member of the Global Faculty Network of Duke Corporate Education.
