Biography
Professor Simon Mercado is Campus Dean/Director for ESCP Europe Business School, London (UK). A member of ESCP’s European Executive Committee, Professor Mercado is responsible for the strategic development of ESCP’s London School and directs its senior management team. He also acts as Managing Director of the School’s Corporate Services Board, responsible for executive education provision to high recognition clients including NATO and leading multinational business firms.
Simon has over a decade of senior level experience in UKHE. Between 2011 and early 2015, Simon served as Associate Dean at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, where he was also Professor in Global Management and Education. This position was the capstone of 10 years of service as a senior member of the NBS management team, including spells as Head of International Affairs and External Relations, and Head of Department (Strategic Management & Marketing).
Across these roles, Simon has developed extensive experience of HE leadership and governance across European markets. At different points, he has held senior level responsibilities in such areas as: strategy and finance, faculty management, external relations, quality assurance, accreditation, internationalisation, student experience, and portfolio development.
He currently serves at Steering Committee level for the EFMD and AACSB; as External Examiner for joint/dual international degree programmes at the University of Hertfordshire; and as an Advisory Board member to international business schools in Greece and Finland.
Simon has been involved in educational projects and collaborations all over the world and has worked collaboratively with a significant number of European institutions in joint/dual degree development and wider educational projects. A strong advocate of cross-border and inter-disciplinary education, his consultancy and HE advisory work is focused on supporting internationalisation processes and accreditation. He is a regular speaker and commentator on education and management issues, presenting and convening at major international events and conferences under the auspices of the AACSB, ABS, EFMD, APAIE and EAIE.
Simon holds a PhD in International Political Economy (IPE) and a Masters’ in International Relations (IR) from the University of Nottingham. His primary research interest is in the internationalisation of higher education and commercial services and he has published on issues related to international management and education, including a widely adopted textbook on European Business and Culture.
His teaching interests and history span international strategy, cross-cultural management, European marketing and management. At both NBS and ESCP-Europe he has taught on Bachelors, Masters’ and MBA courses and has supervised both M- and D-level candidates. Externally, Simon has worked as a Visiting Scholar/Professor for accredited EFMD member business schools in Poland and France.
Under his 2.5 years of leadership, the London School of ESCP Europe has expanded student and staff numbers and increased its annual revenues from £5.5mn to £8mn. At federal level, Simon has contributed to strategic planning and accreditation processes as an EXCOM member, and is the School’s appointed liaison with the principal international accreditation bodies.
