Stan BH Tan-Tangbau

Adjunct Faculty at James Cook University, Singapore

Biography

My most recent books are Playing Jazz in Socialist Vietnam: Quyen Van Minh and Jazz in Hanoi (Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, Dec 2021) and Jazz in Socialist Hanoi: Improvisations between Worlds (London & New York: Routledge, Mar 2022). I am now finishing the next book, Ethnographic Panorama of A Transborder Railway Corridor: From Haiphong to Kunming. I am a Stay At Home Dad. I am also a Vietnamologist with specialization in ethnography and extended research interest on cultural narratives and political and social change across the Southeast Asian Massif. I have led international research projects and have published widely on: The Central Highlands of Vietnam; Dian-Viet Railway (Haiphong-Kunming); and Collaborative Digital Autoethnography. I devoted my entire early career to develop an original model of Collaborative Digital Autoethnography in the form of #kachinlifestories, a public digital ethnography project designed for the Kachin people. #kachinlifestories is created and mobilised under anthropological conditions of the globalising digital present. Today, #kachinlifestories has already become a formidable connector for anyone seeking an incredibly rich resource of living autoethnographic knowledge about the Kachin, and more importantly, for Kachin who wish to represent their own individual selves in a larger collage of being Kachin. It is a living knowledge base that is awaiting the next paradigm change in ethnography.
