Subhayan is a computational social scientist with a Ph.D. in Communication from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his doctoral studies, Subhayan graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science, and a Master of Science in Mathematics from BITS Pilani, India, and spent a couple of years in the industry working in software and data analytics.

Subhayan situates his research at the intersection of digital media and online human behaviour, drawing from a wide repertoire of computational methods that blend observational as well as experimental approaches – such as network analysis, statistical inference, and agent-based simulations. His research has appeared in international journals such as Journal of Communication, Political Communication, Communication and the Public, as well as in popular media outlets such as the Washington Post and the Indian Express.

He has been a researcher at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, and the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, and has delivered invited lectures at New York University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

At CNM, in addition to his research acivities, Subhayan is currently developing quantitative and computational modules for teaching.

Research Interests

Subhayan is interested in using computational methods such as

  • social network analysis
  • data science
  • agent-based simulations, and
  • online behavioral experiments

to understand online human behavior on digital media platforms, particularly in the domain of political communication.
