Biography
Dr. Sumitava Mukherjee is a decision researcher and works as an Assistant Professor at Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Delhi where he is associated with psychology and cognitive science. His research area is the psychology of human judgment and decision making that intersects behavioral science and behavioral economics. His current interests are related to behavioral science for public health and human-technology interactions.
His previous work has challenged the premise of unconscious thought (deliberation-without-attention leads to better decisions), presented a sub-sampling heuristic that explains how we make decently good decisions even in complex information-heavy information environments, suggested a common attentional mechanism based on perceptual broadening that underlie prosocial donations. His more recent work has challenged the classic idea that losses always loom larger than gains and has presented an alternative - the magnitude-dependent loss aversion hypothesis. He continues to be intersted in the foundational psychology of gains and losses from multiple angles along with its applications to different aspects of individuals, businesses and society.
He has previously been a member of Association for Psychological Science (APS) and National Academy of Psychology (NAOP) India for more than 10 years during which he served as an executive committee member of NAOP India and was also the executive member of Cultural Evolution Society. He was awarded the Emerging Psychologist award in 2014 by NAOP India, the Outstanding researcher award by IIT Gandhinagar in 2014 and the Young Psychologist award in 2020 by NAOP India for his contributions academically and professionally. Mukherjee is a member of Society for Judgment and Decision Making (SJDM); Professional member in Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); and a Life-member of Indian Science Congress.
