Dr. Tej Kumar Karki was a MIT International Visiting Scholar for Malaysian Sustainable

Cities Program (MSCP) from September 2015 to May 2016. At MIT he completed

research on flood disasters in Malaysian cities and has produced a video on flood disaster

as a teaching material. Prior to joining the MIT program, he was an Assistant Professor in

the Department of Urban Planning and Design, Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University

(XJTLU), Suzhou, China. At XJTLU, he taught sustainable urban planning strategies,

planning law, and governance and international planning studies courses to graduate and

undergraduate students.

Tej has also served as the chief planner at Kathmandu Town Planning Office. He has

over 16 years of experience working in various government planning agencies and

supervised five urban land readjustment projects in Kathmandu Valley.  His research

interests range from the politics of plan implementation to climate change and disaster

mitigation in cities. He has published articles in Planning Theory, Housing Policy

Debate, and Habitat International journals.  He has lectured as a guest at Urban Risk Lab

and SPURS in MIT on flood disasters in cities and planning in the third world

respectively. At present, he is carrying out research on politics of earthquake disaster in

Nepal, and rich-poor collaboration for poverty reduction. He is also working on creating

a video to educate people on how to cope with earthquake disaster in a seismic region.
