Biography
Aalto University School of Business
I am interested in future web-based cellulosic products that I believe will largely replace the curent mature generature of paper. I am pursuing two main lines in my research. The first is novel nanocellulose/inorganic compsites. These types of matrials resemble paper at first glance, but on closer examination offer many unique functional properties. Additionally, the likely manufacturing costs are very favorable. I am working on various aspects of the manufacturing paradigm for nanocellulose composites including: forming, dewatering, nanocellulose quality and manufacture. Another major avenue in my research is the rational integration of polymeric and mineral components in future paper and composite structures. Nature does this every day in various biological systems in the form of biomineral synthesis. I am curently studying how to combine both starch/calcium carbonate and nanocellulose/calcium carbonate to improve the cost structure and performance of various paper and cellulose composites. For this purpose, we are building a "biominerals" lab with small scale reactors and modular processing stages. I am a strong beliver in international collaboration and networking amongst young scientists. As director of a national graduate school (PaPSaT) on bioproducts technology I have been active building a European network for PhD students. In the next step, we are seeking funding for a truly Europen Doctoral School for cellulose related products and technologies.
BACKGROUND
I was born and raised in the USA, in upsate New York. For the last 20+ years I have lived, worked and studied in Finland. I have been involved with industry all of my life and have spent a lot of my career serving the paper industry in one form of another. Most recently, I was research director at the large pulp and paper research organization, KCL, located here in Otaniemi.
