Thomas Werlen

PD Dr. Thomas Werlen is the Managing Partner of the Zurich office. Thomas’ practice focuses on white collar and corporate investigations as well as on cross-border litigation, international arbitration, and complex financial disputes. Prior to joining Quinn Emanuel, he served as Group General Counsel and a member of the Executive Committee for the global player Novartis. As GC of Novartis, Thomas oversaw a worldwide team of over 750 lawyers, covering all areas of litigation affecting a multinational company with a US listing in the heavily regulated pharmaceutical industry. This included class actions, product liability cases, intellectual property and in particular patent disputes, government investigations, commercial litigation and arbitration across multiple jurisdictions.

Thomas joined Novartis from Allen & Overy in London, where he lead the continental European US Law practice as a leading capital markets and M & A lawyer. Thomas started his legal career at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York and London and Davis Polk in London covering all types of international banking and capital markets products including securities and complex financial transactions, such as derivatives, CDOs and other structured finance products. He was also involved in regulatory matters involving the SEC, the CFTC and various other capital markets regulators.
