Dr. Tim Coburn joined the Systems Engineering faculty at CSU after serving as Director of the School of Energy Economics, Policy and Commerce at The University of Tulsa and as Professor of Energy and Operations Management.

Formerly he served as the Mesa Petroleum Professor of Statistics and Management Science, Director of the School of Information Technology and Computing, and Associate Dean for Technology Initiatives in the College of Business at Abilene Christian University, and worked in various managerial and technical roles in the Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and at Marathon Oil Company and Phillips Petroleum Company. He has also held visiting teaching and/or research positions at The University of Denver, Sandia National Laboratory, US Geological Survey, Kansas Geological Survey, the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) at University of Colorado-Boulder, and the University of Colorado-Denver; and he currently holds a joint appointment at NREL in the Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis (JISEA).

Prof. Coburn’s research activities are centered on interdisciplinary applications of statistics, analytics, and data science in energy and transportation operations, along with associated systems and policy analysis. Recent publications include:

  • Perspectives on expanding EV charging infrastructure in the US
  • Managing global transport energy use and emissions through technology, policy and collaborative initiatives
  • Comparison of machine learning approaches used to identify the drivers of Bakken oil well productivity
  • Managing the electricity-gas interface: current environment and emerging solutions
  • Oil and gas infrastructure: a technical review
  • Statistical detection of flow regime changes in horizontal hydraulically fractured Bakken oil wells

He serves on the Energy Statistics Committee of the American Statistical Association, an advisory/consultancy panel for the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and collaborates as an advisory consultant with the Asia Pacific Energy Research Center (APERC).
