Smith School of Business

Tony Dimnik is a top-ranked professor at some of the best business schools in the world and one of the most respected management educators in Canada. He is an authority on strategic control systems and the relationship between capital budgeting and strategy and he has contributed to the understanding and practice of Activity Based Costing and the Balanced Scorecard. His current research is on Open Book Management.

He was recently named one of the best university lecturers in Ontario by TVOntario.

During his 1996-1999 tenure as Director of the Queen’s National Executive MBA Program, his team tripled enrolment, increased tuition by 30% and achieved significant improvements on every measure of program quality.

In 1995-1996, he was a member of the McGill team that developed and launched the Henry Mintzberg International Masters Program in Practicing Management (IMPM).

He is the former chair of the audit committees of a TSE listed company, and of Quicklaw, Canada’s leading source of legal information.

One of his interests is cinema and he often writes and speaks on how accountants are portrayed in the movies.

After obtaining a diploma in radio arts from the Lethbridge Community College, he worked in media for ten years before returning to university for an undergraduate degree at the University of Regina and a Ph.D. in accounting at the Ivey School of Business (University of Western Ontario 1988).

He has worked with organizations such as Microsoft, Financial Executives International, Alcan, VIA Rail, Canada Post, Royal Bank, Johnson & Johnson, Nortel, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Campbell Soup, Canadian National Railway, Canadian Forces College, WCB-Alberta, Cirque du Soleil, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Lilydale Foods, and PPX (Performance and Planning Exchange).
