Academic Area: Strategy

Bio

I am a member of the Strategy area faculty at Duke‘s Fuqua School of Business and a Fellow at Duke''s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative.

My research focuses on how firms respond to competition. That includes both responding through external actions like price or quality changes, and internal actions like changing staffing, compensation, or the amount of autonomy staff have. That research is now leading me into some interesting questions about policies toward competition and entrepreneurship. My research has been published in journals including Management Science and the Strategic Management Journal and been covered by outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Marketplace (APM).

I did my undergraduate degree at Stanford University with my Honors thesis advised by Nobel laureate Kenneth Arrow. My doctorate is from Berkeley‘s Haas School of Business. Prior to my graduate study, I worked at Google for which I have received patents on everything from detecting click fraud to music classification.

Currently, I teach the core course “Fundamentals of Strategy” at Fuqua. I’ve also taught courses in undergraduate and doctoral programs on strategy and statistical/empirical methods as well as executive capsule lessons at firms including Google.

I am also the administrator of the Manuel Bennett Art Trust and am a board member of a non-profit “incubator” for musicians, Zoo Labs, which is trying to help musicians develop new business models for funding their art.
