Dr. Chew is the Head of Programme (Bachelor of Sports and Physical Education) at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. A key part of his work centers on managing and developing undergraduate and graduate programmes for developing human capital for the sports, physical education, and outdoor education sectors.
He received his PhD from Nanyang Technological University, and his undergraduate degree in physical education from the University of Calgary in Canada.
As an Assistant Professor at National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, he taught sport and exercise psychology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels as well as undergraduate sports curriculum studies courses.
His research interest focuses on the influence of social environmental factors on one’s motivational processes that are associated with psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. A key area of study is on parental influence and child correlates. Centering the theoretical framework of his research on self-determination theory (SDT), Dr. Chew’s research interests also include examining the motivational dynamics associated involved in other forms of relationships in relation to various outcomes related to people’s involvement in physical activity and sports.
As a practitioner, Dr. Chew’s past working experience spanned across the fields of sport management, physical education, and character education. He was part of the senior management at Sport Singapore (formerly known as Singapore Sports Council) responsible for charting the directions and driving the development of sport in Singapore. He also taught physical education in different educational settings – secondary school, junior college, polytechnic. Dr. Chew was also part of the team that developed and implemented the character education programme in Temasek Polytechnic.
