Walter Aerts is Professor Accountancy and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance (Faculty of Applied Economic Sciences) at University of Antwerp. He holds a degree of Business Engineer and a PhD in Applied Economic Sciences at University of Antwerp. He had accumulated many years of experience in business as a staff member in several business economic positions in the utilities sector. He was a visiting professor at the Université de Genève (International Organisations MBA), at the National Institute of Management (Phnom Penh) and at the Université du Québec à Montreal (UQAM) where he was an accredited researcher as well. He teaches courses of financial accounting, financial reporting and analysis, internal control and risk management, and international financial reporting standards. He is a member of the IFRS-committee of the Commission of Accounting Standards (CBN) and the Working group for the Revision of the CBN advice.
His research focuses on topics such as economic effects of reporting, IPOs, internal control and corporate governance, media influence on business conduct, impression management, and narrative reporting. He is associate editor of the British Accounting Review, and member of the editorial board of Accountancy and Bedrijfskunde and the Open Business Journal. He published books about financial reporting, fair value accounting and business combinations. He published several articles in international academic journals such as Accounting, Organizations and Society, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Accounting and Business Research, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Management Decision, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and European Accounting Review, about topics in the fields of accounting and finance.
