Wendy Macias Konstantopoulos

Dr. Wendy Macias-Konstantopoulos, MD, MPH is Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School and attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She completed a Global Health Leadership Fellowship at MGH and earned her Master of Public Health degree from Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Macias-Konstantopoulos is the MGH Endowed Scholar for Leadership in Emergency Medicine and Director of the Center for Social Justice and Health Equity in the MGH Emergency Department’s (ED). She is founding Executive Director of the Mass General Freedom Clinic, an innovative primary and preventative health care clinic for human trafficking victims and survivors that won the 2014 Partnership for Freedom national competition. The Mass General Freedom Clinic also serves as the medical home for a unique MGH collaboration with the nonprofit Hostage US, through which trauma-informed medical care and care coordination is provided for repatriated American captives and their families.

Dr. Macias-Konstantopoulos is particularly interested in public health and population management interventions that address social determinants of disease and improve the health and well-being of underserved patients and communities. She is a member of the Medicaid ACO leadership team in the ED which places special attention on interdisciplinary complex patient care coordination. She was site PI for a large NIH-funded randomized controlled trial of an ED-based brief intervention for substance use, and is active with current hospital efforts to reduce the unmet health and social needs of patients. Her current research and programmatic efforts focus on expanding knowledge and closing the challenging structural gaps that perpetuate health disparities. In addition, Dr. Macias-Konstantopoulos is the 5-term elected Chair of the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Committee on Violence Intervention and Prevention and serves various state and federal groups engaging in education and policy advocacy efforts on behalf of trafficked individuals.

Research

Dr. Macias serves as PI on a study on sex trafficking of women and girls in the Boston area, and as site PI on a federally-funded study on ED-based interventions for drug abuse.
