Dr. Winter Nie is a Professor of Operations and Service Management at IMD.
Dr. Nie’s areas of research interest are service management (such as customer focused organization, service excellence, and transformation from products to solutions), low cost competition, and value chain (extended supply chain). Her book (2012), In the Shadow of the Dragon: The Global Expansion of Chinese Companies-and How It Will Change Business Forever, provides profiles of Chinese key players, insights into subtle yet powerful strategies used to gain market dominance, an understanding of the Chinese approach to going global, and analysis of the Chinese way of innovation. Her other book (2009), Made in China-Secrets of China's Dynamic Entrepreneurs, takes an insider's look at Chinese entrepreneurs' path to success and offers insights as how MNCs could compete and/or work with them. She has also co-authored several other books and is the author of many articles, case studies, and book chapters. Her research has appeared in both academic and practitioners’ journals. Currently she is researching and developing cases in financial service industries, professional services, B2B, and client-supplier partnership, and supply chain. She has also written many cases on Chinese companies.
Professor Nie has provided training programs for and consulted with companies in pharmaceutical, telecommunications, automotive, food and beverage, machinery, clothing and fashion, and electronics industries as well as financial and professional services. Currently, she is the program director for ABB senior leadership development program, PNB senior leadership program and talent leadership program, DNV leadership program, Sumitomo global leadership program, HSBC China emerging leaders program, Novartis China emerging leaders program, Accenture senior leadership program, and China CEO program.
She has taught programs in US, Britain, France, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and China. She has won several teaching and research awards.
She holds a PhD from the University of Utah.
