Xiaohui Chen

Overview

Xiaohui Chen (Helen) is a Lecturer in Biomaterials Science at the Division of Dentistry, School of Medical Sciences. She is a member of the executive board of Manchester Biomaterials.

She sits on the Division Health and Safety Committee and works as the Divisional Safety Officer and Deputy H&S Lead for Division of Dentistry. She is a trained First Aider and a member of the Divisional Human Tissue Act Committee.

Biography

Helen joined School of Dentistry, The University of Manchester as a lecturer in Jan 2014.

She completed her BEng (Hons) in Metallurgy with Northeastern University of China in 2004 and a MEng (Hons) in Materials Science in 2005 with Queen Mary University of London. Helen’s PhD ‘the controlled crystallisation of high strength leucite glass-ceramics’ successfully produced a range of novel strong leucite glass-ceramics with controlled microstructure. This work led to 2 US patents and the commercialisation of ‘Lumineers 2’ that uses a 100% pain-free minimally invasive approach, saving as much as 20% enamel reduction per patient, as tooth preparation and anaesthesia are not required. It is used and sold in 46 countries and won industry awards for clinical and cosmetic excellence from the Clinical Research Associates and Dental Advisor.

After completing her PhD in 2009, Helen worked as a postdoctoral researcher on a wide range of projects including Oral Science supported ‘The development of fibre-like leucite glass-ceramics for dental applications’, NIHR funded ‘Novel zinc containing bioglass coatings to eliminate infections associated with Orthopaedic wires and pins’, industrial funded ‘Nano Hydroxyapatite Mouthwash development project’ etc. She also took a one year career break between 2011 and 2012.
