Research & Teaching Interests

Professor Cuervo-Cazurra analyzes three topics in his research: the internationalization of firms, with a special interest in emerging market multinationals; capability upgrading, particularly technological capabilities; and governance challenges, focusing on corruption in international business. His seventy published research papers appear in leading academic journals, such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Research Policy, Strategic Management Journal, and in edited books. He teaches courses on global strategy and sustainability at the undergraduate, masters, executive and Ph.D. levels, and has provided executive training to managers of multinationals on how to internationalize their firms successfully.

Industry & Academic Experience

Professor Cuervo-Cazurra is the Lloyd Mullin Fellow and was the Robert Morrison Fellow and Walsh Research Professor at Northeastern University. Before joining Northeastern University he was a faculty member at the University of South Carolina and the University of Minnesota and a visiting professor at Cornell University. He has taught at universities around the world such as FGV and FDC in Brazil, INCAE in Costa Rica, Moterrey Tec and IPADE in Mexico, University of Valencia in Spain, Thammasat University in Thailand and WU in Austria.

Services to the Profession

Professor Cuervo-Cazurra is the Immediate Past Chair of the Academy of Management''s International Management Division; he was elected to the Executive Committee for 2012-2017. He was elected Representative-at-Large of the Strategic Management Society''s Global Strategy Group for 2006-8 and served as Track Chair at the Academy of International Business Annual Meeting in 2003 and 2011. He is the incoming Co-Editor of Global Strategy Journal, was the reviewing editor of the Journal of International Business Studies and has served on the editorial boards of other leading journals, such as Journal of International Management, Journal of World Business, Organization Studies, and Strategic Management Journal.
