Brian McFadden serves as an Assistant Professor of Media Studies at Hofstra University’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication where he teaches courses in Media Literacy, Media History, Media and Popular Culture, Media Research Methods, and Media Theory. Professor McFadden has been teaching courses within the area of Media and Communication since 2008.

Professor McFadden’s research agenda examines issues of identity within popular culture. Specifically, Professor McFadden is interested in understanding how social media users perform their identity as they cultivate and develop meaningful relationships with other users. As a former sports beat reporter (covering Yankees, Mets, and Knicks), Professor McFadden’s research is also tethered to the world of sport. Specifically, Professor McFadden is interested in examining how social and cultural shifts affect the framing and telling of sports stories. Lastly, Professor McFadden is interested in pedagogical approaches to teaching media studies in higher education. To this end, he researches and participates in panels featuring different approaches to teaching media studies in our ever-changing media landscape.

Prior to life in academe, Professor McFadden worked in broadcast media during which time his work was recognized by both The Society of Professional Journalists (2008) and the New York State Broadcasters Association Inc. (2007 & 2008) as a field producer covering the NFL Draft.
