Dr. John T. Nagurney, Attending Physician in the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine, received his MD from Cornell University Medical College. He also received an MPH from the Harvard University School of Public Health. Dr. Nagurney completed his residency at The New York Hospital- Cornell University Medical Center and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in Public Health and Ambulatory Care at the same institutions. He served as the Chief of the Emergency Department of Cambridge City Hospital prior to moving to Massachusetts General Hospital. He has co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and published numerous abstracts and book chapters. He has also authored many articles for the general public in health education. He is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Nagurney was the initial Research Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine and served in that role from 1995 to 2017. He then became its Research Director Emeritus. He has served on the MGH’s Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects for the past 25 years. He remains an active researcher and teacher in the field of acute cardiovascular emergencies. In that role he advises faculty, fellows and residents in research design and methodology. He has also served as mentor to dozens of junior colleagues including Harvard College pre-medical students. He developed a curriculum in research methodology for fellows and has given multiple didactic workshops on clinical research for the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency program.

Research

Dr. Nagurney has conducted clinical research, and over the last twenty-five years has written or been a coauthor on over 120 manuscripts. He has also mentored medical students, residents, fellows and junior faculty. He has been a funded co investigator on multiple NIH RO 1 and AHRQ grants and has performed many industry-sponsored studies as well. Dr. Nagurney became the ED's Research Director in 1995. He joined the Mass General Brigham IRB in 1998, and has represented the department on the HMS- DEM Research Committee, serving three terms as chairman. In his current role as Research Director Emeritus for the Department of Emergency Medicine, he mentor faculty and fellows in research design, methodology, and human subjects considerations.
