Marieke Huysentruyt’s research and teaching concern the effectiveness of organizations at addressing today’s major societal challenges, like inequality and global warming. She has studied, among other topics: the effects of personal values, organizational culture and management practices on firm productivity (drawing on both experimental evidence and large-scale, cross-country panel data on social enterprises), the role of individual intrinsic and extrinsic motives in influencing the performance of nascent social entrepreneurs (using a field experiment), how empathy affects the success of corporate social initiatives (using field experiments).

She received several awards including the Best Paper Award at the 14th Annual Conference on Social Entrepreneurship in 2017. She has published in Management Science, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty and others. Her work has been featured in the Economist and been awarded grants from the European Commission, Research Foundation Flanders, and the Strategy Research Foundation.

Marieke Huysentruyt is Assistant Professor of Strategy at HEC Paris, and academic affiliate at the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics, Stockholm School of Economics, and ideas42, a non-profit organization that uses insights from behavioral economics and psychology to solve social problems.

Prior to joining HEC, she was a social entrepreneur, co-founder and co-leader of the Oksigen Lab, a non-profit accelerator and a research lab for soci(et)al entrepreneurship, and i-propeller, a boutique consultancy that helps firms develop service innovations that are not only profitable but also have a large positive societal impact.

Marieke Huysentruyt received a M.Sc. in Bioengineering from Catholic University of Leuven, a M.Sc. in Applied Economics and Management from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics.
