Dr. Roeland J.W. Middelbeek is a Staff Physician and Assistant Investigator at the Joslin Diabetes Center. Dr. Middelbeek obtained his medical degree from VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, followed by his endocrinology fellowship at the joint Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Joslin Diabetes Center’s joint program. Currently, he sees patients in the endocrinology and diabetes clinics at the Joslin Diabetes Center and in the Division of Endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also participates in the Young Adult Clinic at the Joslin Diabetes Center.

Dr. Middelbeek’s research focuses on the role of physical activity and exercise in human health and disease, with a particular focus on obesity and type 2 diabetes. His basic and translational science work has focused on elucidating the role of both brown and white adipose tissue in glucose homeostasis. As co-investigator of the DPPOS and Look AHEAD clinical trials, he studies the role of physical activity in relation to glucose metabolism and aging. His clinical research interests include exercise and diabetes, as well as bariatric surgery in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Middelbeek has a specific clinical interest in the role of exercise in the prevention of prediabetes, and the treatment of type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
