Robert Russell Dyk is currently an Executive Director in Morgan Stanley’s Commodity Division. He is responsible for sales coverage of commodity investor clients ranging from asset managers to hedge funds to family offices and even retail clients. He also oversees and contributes to Morgan Stanley’s commodity desk strategy publications.
While familiar with all sectors of commodities, Russell’s expertise is in energy, including oil and refined products; natural gas; power, coal and emissions; and freight. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2005, he held a similar role at Deutsche Bank.
Russell’s introduction to energy markets began after graduate school with a two-year stint at Enron, where he held roles within the gas marketing and LNG trading and structuring groups.
Russell started his career in energy in the early 1990s as a Field Engineer for Schlumberger Oilfield Services in Egypt, Turkey and Kazakstan. He also worked as a project manager for MicroGeophysics Corporation, an environmental engineering firm in Denver.
Russell holds a BSc. in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines and an MA from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in International Economics with a regional focus on Central Asia.
He has spoken about hedge funds’ role in energy markets as well as the changing landscape of US natural gas production at the NYU Energy Forum and the SAIS Global Energy and Environment Initiative. He has written about oil and natural gas issues for Nefte Compass, Gas Matters, and the Journal Natural Gas & Electricity.
