Biography
University of Toronto
Salman Khalili-Araghi is fascinated by the potential intersection of design and technology. He has conducted several academic- and industry-oriented research projects in the development of design technology, and collaborated with experts in architecture, engineering, art and computer science. Salman specializes in digital technology, computer programming, computational design, parametric modeling, and performance simulation. In his postdoctoral research at the National University of Singapore, Salman was involved in the Virtual Singapore project announced by the Singapore government as part of Singapore’s Smart Nation drive. He was involved in the development of a methodology and algorithm to automate the mapping and conversation of Building Information Models into IFC and CityGML building models.
Salman received his Ph.D. with specialization in computational media design from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Science in Architecture, Building Science and Urbanism from Technical University of Delft. His Ph.D. research focuses on the design and production process of housing and examines how the complexity of a dimensional customization system could be addressed effectively using building information modeling (BIM) software, a simple, but layered interaction with the parametric model. He has designed and developed a Revit plug-in that supports a constraint-based dimensional customization and automatic design validation.
Professionally, Salman co-founded a consulting firm, Henko BIM Solutions Ltd., with the mission to “manage communication by computation.” The company attracted attention of an array of notable housing developers. As a technological solution in the building industry, Henko investigates aspects of computing in architecture and develop software plug-ins, and web-based application which answers the challenge of data management and interoperability among stakeholders.
Salman’s teaching experience covers technical dimensions of architecture and technologies supporting design processes and the enhancement of building performance. He is skilled in design technology, BIM and computational design, and taught graduate-level courses on computer programming and building performance simulation. He has collaborated with colleagues and faculty across domains and the result of his work have been published in peer-reviewed journals, such as Automation in Construction, International Journal of Building Engineering, International Journal of Swarm Intelligence, CAAD Futures and eCAADe among others.
